Joan and Family:I write this on June 7th!I
was casually viewing the obits in the funeral homes here when I saw Pleman’s!I hadn’t heard anything, and, for me that is unusual! Please accept our condolences! I had known him since High School in Botwood and from then til now I had a high opinion of him, as a true gentleman, a churchman, and a community activist and loved his sense of of humour!I could,of course write much more but I wanted to assure you that our hearts are with you as you mourn and celebrate his life!

I can remember having him as a teacher in Norris arm. He was always there for the students. The best memory I've had in school from him was watching a girl full of tears at his desk one day because she was struggling to understand what was being taught. I still see that tear flowing down his cheek. He was a great guy and I enjoyed them when he taught me. His most famous words that I can remember from school was when you asked him for help and you didn't say thank you. He would always ask you what are those things in the army that shoot off the bullet with the big arm in front. We would all say tanks and he'd say you're welcome. My condolences to your family on your loss. I will always cherish the memories from school and the neighborhood. Rest in peace

I am very sorry for the loss of Pleman. He was a very kind , generous and friendly man who loved his family very much and loved all his extended family as well. He and Joan helped out in the community at various events and I always enjoyed the updates about what has been going on when they visited Helen and Mike in Ontario. He was a talented musician also and I enjoyed his family stories . I will miss him , but know he is now at peace . I will treasure all the memories of him and keep everybody close to him in my heart . Laurie McDougall

I was deeply saddened to hear of Mr. Menchenton’s passing. He was a stellar mathematics teacher and volleyball coach! He made such a difference in so many lives and helped so many young people believe in their abilities- helping them choose the better path. I know you are in heaven singing the “Great Speckled Bird” for my darling Mother and her family.
May you forever rest in peace, Mr. Menchenton ❤️

Joan, Helen, Sherri, and families…
We were so saddened to hear of Mr. Menchenton’s passing.
Sir was a steadfast part of our lives since our youth, though living miles apart and crossing paths seemingly only during special occasions.
He was certainly much more than a math teacher…he taught use many lessons that no book could ever replicate.
I can remember the look on his face after leading Norris Arm Integrated to the 1985 Provincial Grade 7 Volleyball Championship.
He had absolute pride in all of HIS boys and I truly believe that was his Stanley Cup!
He took us under his wing from the outset as his students and made every effort to attend the key events of our lives, such as our wedding (writing a song for the banquet) and the christening of our boys.
We will never forget his kindness, his genuine caring nature, and his semi-funny jokes.
His leadership skills were admirable and quite influential on both of us.
We so regret that we could not make it there for his send off.
Mr. Menchenton, you will always hold a special place in our hearts.
Wishing you all comfort and strength in the days to come…

Joan & family; Siblings & family and all extended family:
My earliest memory of Pleman is during the winter months. He would go to the school, ahead of the younger ones, to light the fire in the stove so it would be warm when we got there. If there had been snow overnight, we would follow in his footsteps for an easier walk to school. One of my recent memories of Pleman's kindness is when he told me that if I wanted to spend more time in Norris Arm North, during my visit home, I would be welcome to stay at his home so I could do that. I will cherish those memories and so many more, one of which was his closeness to Mom and Dad and to our family in general. Love Gladys
Our deepest sympathy in the loss of your loved one.
You are all in our heart and prayers.

Sorry to hear of Pleman's passing. What a wonderful teacher he was. Pleman spoke at my father's funeral in 2019 about when they were young kids. They would walk home from school and Dad would be singing a song based on a verse from the bible "In my fathers house", and they would all chime in add in their own words. Below is the song that Pleman helped write and sang at Dad's funeral.
In My Fathers House..
Come and go with me to my Father's house
To my Father's house, to my Father's house
Come and go with me to my Father's house
Where there's Joy, Joy, Joy..
It's no very far to my Father's house
To my Father's house, to my Father's house
It's no very far to my Father's house
Where there's Joy, Joy, Joy..
Jesus is the way to my Father's house
To my Father's house, to my Father's house
Jesus is the way to my Father's house
Where there's joy, joy, joy..
Jesus is the light in my Father's house
In my Father's house, in my Father's house
Jesus is the light in my Father's house
Where there's joy, joy, joy....
I'm sure he'll be singing this along with Dad when the see each other in heaven.......

Q: How did you meet Pleman?
A: Met Pleman when he came to Englee to teach and boarded at our house. Little did I know then that he would later become my brother-in-law. He would become somewhat of a father figure to me and help me through a lot of different situations. As a part of my family he was always there when needed. Later he would become my principal when I taught at Norris Arm for 4 wonderful years. He helped me build my house and was always there for friendly advice when needed. Can't forget that Joan & Pleman had Mom stay with them for 16 years, where she was happy and content. He was a great friend and brother-in-law and will truly be missed. RIP Pleman!

I’ll never forget his dedication to us boys during our young teenage years. He would open the gym for us in the evenings, and do his best to keep us out of trouble. He gained some knowledge about Volleyball from a fellow Teacher, and spent countless hours with us practicing and teaching us the basics. He would even give bottles of pop or bags of chips to any of us who could make 10 serves in a row, lol. Well, his dedication and efforts helped develop us into one of the best Volleyball Teams in the Province, and a majority of us went on to compete in the Canadian Championships, and took many teams by storm.
I’ll never forget the love and compassion he showed to us back then, and the overall great influence he had on our lives. Rest peacefully, and know your memory will last with us forever.

Wow! So many memories keep flooding back when I heard of Pleman's passing. In our early childhood years ago in Norris Arm, North we shared thoughts and aspirations of our future in 10,20 and even 50 years (some of which came true!). We said we would come back from wherever we are and meet at Melbourne's Point to compare notes. Some are very personal and it would be folly of me to share in this forum. That's the thing about the innocence of youth, there is no filter to censure what you think and say.
Pleman and I had a special bond that was beyond the kindred as first cousins and more like in the movies where you make the pledge of "friendship forever" in the pretend sharing of blood.
My condolences to Joan, the children and grandchildren and to all of Pleman's siblings and there are many.
I Love You, Pleman.
Your Best Friend

Pleman had a huge impact on the lives of many of his students at Norris Arm Integrated school and I was one of them.
I remember once in the early 80’s being called into his office (I think he was Vice Principal at the time) and I was so nervous! He sat me down and informed that I had achieved the highest marks in my class that year and how proud he was of me. (Whew! That was a relief! I thought I was in trouble!) With a tear in his eye he told me that I could be anything I wanted to be when it came time for me to choose a career in life and went on to say a lot of things to boost my confidence which I had very little of. I knew then how much he cared for each of his students and that our
achievements were HIS achievements.
He was like a father to us in many ways: strict, demanded respect, put the fear of God in us sometimes but truly cared about us. He wanted us all to do well and when we did, he was cheering the loudest. If we weren’t doing well he would help in any way he could.
Thank you Mr. Menchenton for being an awesome educator and giving my younger self a much needed boost of confidence that day so long ago.
R.I.P Sir

Will always remember him calling me little Aunt Dora after my grandmother. He always called me that when I seen him. Also all the memories of Norris Arm Integrated he loved his sweets, I would always take something homemade and he would give me a dollar or two for it. I remember sitting at the tables during lunch mingling and chatting with the students at the other end of the table. He was always so delighted to get a treat and me being a little kid the same to get some change money.
Love and prayers to the Menchenton family.
