Obituary of Pleman Menchenton

Please share a memory of Pleman to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
We remember and celebrate the life of Pleman Wilson Menchenton a devoted husband, father, grandfather, teacher, volunteer, musician, and friend. His life was a shining example of service, compassion, and unwavering dedication to family and community. Pleman passed peacefully away at the Lewisporte Health Centre on Saturday, May 31, 2025 at the age of 84 years. For over thirty-two years, Pleman devoted himself to teaching in the communities of Burlington, Englee, Norris Arm North, and Norris Arm South. A passionate educator, he believed deeply in the power of learning and helped countless students and adults find their path, whether in a classroom or while tutoring adults working toward their GED. His commitment to his community extended far beyond education. He served as a volunteer firefighter in both Norris Arm North and South, always willing to step in when help was needed. He was a long-standing member of the Lions Club, dedicating over twenty years to building a stronger, kinder community. He served on the town council of Norris Arm South and completed a term as mayor, always working for the betterment of his neighbours and friends. He gave his time generously, whether as a member of the Norris Arm North recreation committee, the Provincial Waste Management Board, or the Provincial Embalmers and Funeral Directors Board. His faith was also an important part of his life, and he served for several years on the board of Riverside United Church. Pleman had a gift for bringing people together, whether coaching volleyball at Norris Arm Integrated Elementary—where he led the boys’ team to a provincial championship—or volunteering with Phil Grimes and Joan to bring music and joy to Kingsway and North Haven Manor. Music was one of his greatest passions. He played guitar, accordion, harmonica, and piano, writing and performing songs that came from the heart. In every note, he shared joy, humour, and soul. He was also a man who loved the land. An avid potato farmer and skilled logger, he never shied away from hard work. His hands built, nurtured, created, and most importantly, gave. But perhaps his most defining legacy was the love he had for his family. He was loyal, honest, hardworking, and generous. A family man in every sense, he placed his loved ones above all else and filled their lives with warmth, laughter, and guidance. He leaves behind his loving wife, Joan; his daughters, Helen (Michael) and Sherri (John); and his two cherished grandchildren, Benjamin and Erin. His values and love live on in them. Pleman lived a life rich with meaning, purpose, and heart. Though he is no longer with us in body, his spirit will forever be part of the communities he served and the family he cherished. Rest easy. We will carry you with us always. Pleman was born in Norris Arm a son of the Late Melinda and John Menchenton. Leaving to cherish many memories are his wife Joan of 62 years. Two precious daughters Helen (Mike) McDougall and Sherri (John) Hopkins; two treasured grandchildren, Benjamin and Erin. He will be fondly remembered by his siblings, Vera (Val), John (Debbie), Pansy, Madeline (Wayne), Marjorie (Carl), Doreen (Don), Milton (Marina), and Alex (Lillian). As well as his brothers and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews and a large circle of other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Rowena and his brothers George and Kaywood. Resting at Riverside United Church in Norris Arm with Visitation on Monday from 2-4p.m. and 7-8:30p.m. Funeral service will take place on Tuesday, June 3rd, at 2pm with interment to follow at the united Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy donations may be made in his memory to Riverside United Church Cemetery Fund.
