Nan was one of the most selfless people I've had the privilege of knowing. How many times had she risen from the table - sometimes before finishing a meal - because people came walking in the door requiring a meal, cup of tea or conversation? How many times did she just finish washing the dishes only for people to descend upon her any hour of the day or night? Of course, the table would be set again or, at the very least, the kettle would be turned on. Most of the time I spent with Nan, one on one, was the year I was boarding at a family's house in Lewisporte while attending college. Sometimes we would visit people, sometimes we'd go for a drive and sometimes we would just hang out, doing things around her house, chatting about various things. During that year, I saw a side of her I had never seen, a part of herself she may never have had a chance to reveal in a crowd. I will never forget the woman she used to be before Alzheimer's claimed her mind; in fact, Nan will be one I will always cherish and hold dear to my heart.
