Obituary of Brian Kenneth Sceviour

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Brian Sceviour (Lewisporte) a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, great-uncle and friend. Brian passed away peacefully after an extensive stay in hospital battling many health issues. Predeceased by his parents Harold and Madeline Sceviour, parents-in-law Urban and Mary Cheeseman, baby brother John, grandparents Cyril (Beatrice) Sceviour, Aunt Bertha, Albert (Bessie) Wells, brothers-in-law Neil Windsor, William Cheeseman, Calvin Lake and Joseph Picco. Forever remembered and forever loved by his wife Shirley of 44 years, his cherished children; son Christopher (Cassandra), daughter Catherine, and his precious and dearly loved granddaughter Kailey, who loved her Poppy so much. His siblings, sister Anne, brother Peter, sister Rosemary (Peter), and brother Bern (Nora), sisters-in-law Rita (George), Nora (Reg), Mary (Jurgen) and brother-in-law Don (Marie). Other family members include his Uncle Max (Millie), Aunt Jean, Aunt Margaret, Aunt Pat, along with so many, nieces, nephews, great- nieces/nephews, cousins and countless dear friends. Born in Twillingate and raised shortly in Exploits, until the family moved to Lewisporte. As a young boy, he enjoyed games of baseball, pond hockey, table tennis, cheering for the Habs and many board games (that he could win). He had many fond memories of his childhood spent with his grandparents in Exploits. He developed a love for reading at a young age and got his first library card at the age of 6. A love of music was always in his soul with a great record collection of many artists. He graduated from Memorial University in 1972 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, then went on to become a Certified General Accountant. He began a career with Canada Revenue Agency which was followed by a teaching career in the NL public college school system. In addition, he taught Memorial University extension courses in Economics and Accounting as well as, Federal Business Development. After retiring with 30 years of teaching experience, coupled with his accounting background and work ethic; he held positions as Office Manager with Employment Assistant Services, Mid-Island Egg Producers and Dietrac Community College. Brian had a great passion for volunteering and devoting his time to numerous organizations, committees and the Town of Lewisporte. He was a founding member of the Mussel Bed Soiree Committee and served as treasurer in its inaugural year. He was the financial chairman for the 1990 NL Winter Games held in Lewisporte. He dedicated much of his time to the Lewisporte Masonic Lodge and Lewisporte Shrine Club. He held positions as Master, Deputy Past Master, member of Grand Lodge of NL, receiving the Order of Meritorious Service, (a recognition awarded to very few). Brian also held such positions as treasurer of the Lewisporte and Area Chamber of Commerce; Vice-Chairman of the NL Library Resource Board and volunteered with the Lewisporte Heritage Society and the Lewisporte Co-op Board. In 1997, he was elected to the Town Council of Lewisporte. Since elected he served as chairman of the finance committee, served on the negotiating committee and the hiring committee. In 2011 he became Mayor. He worked closely with the Lewisporte Fire Department and his efforts helped acquire the fire hall building extension, new fire rescue truck and the fire chief’s truck. He was also a major influence in keeping the Dietrac Technical Institute in the Town of Lewisporte. Council members said he was very level headed. All decisions would be carefully thought out and always had the town’s best interest at heart. Brian loved sharing time with family and friends. Enjoying a game of darts, cards, crib and especially trivial pursuit. In the summer months he took delight in his time on the water visiting Exploits Island. He was known for his dry sense of humour and his quick wit. He was a kind and generous man and was more than willing to help anyone at anytime. He was admired and respected by those who knew him and will be dearly missed. Bob Dylan was his favourite artist and as he wrote: “just remember that death is not the end”. We love you and we will cherish our memories forever. Arrangements have been placed in the care of Families Funeral Home in Lewisporte, with visitation taking place on Friday from 3pm-6pm. (Complying with government regulations). A private family funeral service will take place from Families Funeral Home in Lewisporte on Saturday, January 22, 2022 at 2pm. ( service will be available to view through families funeral home facebook page). Interment will follow at St. Matthews United Cemetery in Lewisporte. As expressions of sympathy donations may be made to the Lewisporte Masonic Lodge, #14 or the Lewisporte Shrine Club.
