We have many fond memories of our time spent with Fred & Elizabeth. Our friendship started in 2006 at our snowbird park in Florida, so many good times. We were fortunate to go to Change Island for Fred 90th Birthday party. Then they visited us in 2019 for a stay in our Chatham home in Ont.
We will remember Fred as a mentor and a great friend.
RIP dear Friend . Cheers Trevor & Alma Jenkins .

I got to know Fred in what could have been a tragedy for those of us who were on boad the M.V. Miami en route from Herring Neck to Change Islands.. My wife Mary and I with our 3 month old daughter Debbie were passengers from Lewisporte en route home where I was the Minister at Change Islands. After delivering the mail at Herring Neck, Fred set sail for Chamge Islands. Not far out, the engine began to sputter and shut down. It was a bitter cold February day with strong NW wind, and soon it was necessary to drop the anchor. But, The miami continued to drift. The anchor wouldn't hold, and we were closing in on Herring Head where the steep headlands did not offer a place to land.
As the skipper of the Messenger, the Church mission boat, I was concerned. Fred gave orders to launch the life boat, a dory. Two crew of the Miami , carefully moved the three of us into the Dory which was bouncing aroung the stern. Debbie was wrapped up in an oilskin coat and successfully landed in my lap in the stern of the Dory next to her mother. Fred gave us his last hope of being able to land on the shore. What a Skipper!! He stayed with his mate working on the engine.
Our two oarsmen steered for Herring Neck while battling the heavy waves which sent spray over all of us, while turning into ice.
The two oarsmen thought they could land me on a small island where there was a fisherman's shack. Then, I could "pull"
Debbie ashore using a long rope. The risk was too great! So, I said -" Herring Neck boys". Yes, I did that with a very serious prayer. We were still battling the elements when one of the fellows shouted: :"She's heading into the wind.". Fred got the engine going! Shortly, the Miami was running by us. The waves were too risky to take us on board. They threw a rope and towed us close to the island where Debbie was the first to be handed to the Mate. She is now living on Change Islands and participating as a teacher and a member of Council.
Thank you to Skipper Fred. for his wisdom and friendship. Debbie joins me with heartfelt condolences to you all. Berkley Reynolds. P.S. Fred and I reviewed our close call at a Garden Party a couple of years ago. He reminded me that we shared the same age.

I only knew Pop for 18 years and it still doesn't feel like long enough. He gave the best hugs, he was always so kind and thoughtful, and he was unbelievably funny. I spoke to him about death once when we went out to lunch a couple years ago. He said he knew his time was coming soon, and that he had made peace with it, but I hadn't, and I don't think I ever will. My life will be exponentially worse without him in it. At that lunch, his only regret was that he would leave Grandma by herself, and he told me to look after her. So I will. Rest well, Skipper, I love you so so much.

I have only the best memories of Pop. From fishing trips, to playing cards, and sharing his KitKats, Pop taught me to be kind and compassionate, and that with just a little grit you can get through anything life throws at you. Im so lucky to have been able to know him, and I will miss his light every single day.

It was very sad to hear the news of Uncle Fred’s passing. Even though as my life took me out west to Alberta and visits became harder to come by I will always have great memories of Uncle Fred from when I was a young boy. Mossbank get togethers with family and always wondering why he kind of talked funny. It was only when I became older, I understood why. He was such a kind man that always brought a smile to my face.

Dearest Fred, Chaffey Boy,
I will always remember the tough day and half a night we sailed through a snowy gale to reach the quiet harbour of Seldom at the end of October. They were calling for strong SE winds. You said there would be more than that. There was, but not before we had turned north and had the wind behind us. We navigated through the rocks and shoals below Cape freels eventually turning under the Penquin Islands. Blowing and snowing we reached towards Seldom. That was a rougn trip we made together in a dark and snowy October Gale from Burnside to Seldom. The wind increased and we reefed down until we had just one small sail on the bow to slow the boat down and lighten the steering. God love you for joining me on that voyage. It is not the years lived, but the life in those years. You were a spry 80 years old then and the man I turned to the day before to see if you fancied a sailing trip on the last of October. Yes, you said right away. I picked you up from Farewell and we stayed the night in Gander. We watched the forecast get nastier on the TV.
We came on anyway, the passage just a memory now but we got the boat put to bed for the winter and closed the book on an era. Such a gentleman and sailor. Thank you for all the wonderful hospitality during my Greenland and Labrador adventures. Love you both always. Miss you I do.
