Born the forth and final child of tender and loving parents, John and Fanny Penney on the stormy night of February 25th, 1937. In a modest one level house on a tiny peninsula in little seldom, Fogo island. The mid-wife could not get to the home so the baby was born with the help of her dads sister.
The baby arrived that stormy night and was named Yvonne, with no incubators let alone electricity. With fiery red hair the baby was 2 pounds and the length of a barbie doll, her dads wedding ring went to her elbow. They put her in a shoe box and place her behind the wood stove. The miracle of her birth was a blessing, unfortunately during birth her mom lost her sight.
Vonnie, her pet name from her dad was taken to be raised by her aunt as it was thought best for Fanny and the child. However, a year afterwards Fanny took charge and said it’s time to bring vonnie home. Against all who disbelieved Fanny could raise her child without sight, vonnie was home being raised by her mom and dad. The bond they formed remained all of their lives.
Our mom told us many stories about her mother’s strength and perseverance. Her mother’s loss of sight never affect her ability to provide and take care of her children. grandmother Penney died before many of us had a chance to know her but we loved her no less then if We knew her our whole lives. In fact she has made a powerful impact on our lives, after all she gave us our mom.
Our mom.....
A beautiful, tender, unassuming women left home at 17 to become a teacher and principal. She later moved to Gander and through her sister met the love of her life, James Saunders, our dad. We all know how that turned out...... 6 children and 63 years by each other’s side. through the joys and sorrows they remained loyal and dedicated to their children and each other. Her heart was broken 14 months ago when her true love was called home by the angels.
Mom had a strong unbreakable sense of duty to family which meant everything to her. She has always maintained the best years of her life was raising her children. Mom would take turns saying prayers with us. One night kneeling at the boys bedside, the next night kneeling at the girls bedside. The prayer we all remember to this day....God Bless mommy, daddy, Jimmy, Kimmy, Janet, Johnny, Michelle and Bradley and people from all over the world. Amen. Today she would add her Grandchildren...Amanda, Nicole, Jenny and Conrad. Great Grandchildren Lily and Connor.
Thanks mom for.....
your encouragement
supporting our dreams
Always believing in us
Always referring to us as your love
Thanks mom for your
tender heart
tender hands
tender words
Soft voice
And gentle strength as a woman
Mom, rest softly now, we love you and thank you for loving us.

To the Saunders Family
Bonnie and I are so very sad to hear of Aunt Yvonne's passing. May she rest in peace. I have many fond memories of our family visits to see aunt Yvonne and Uncle Jim. I know you could not feel anymore welcome than you did when you stepped into their home. She will certainly be missed by us both. Many times in the last few years Bonnie and I would pop in and I can't say who enjoyed it more us or them. God rest her soul and know we are thinking of you all and sharing in your sadness
